happy birthday RLD!

Poor RLD always has to put up with the holidays being at the same time as his birthday.  But, we always try to make his birthday special, even with all the oodles of hullabaloo surrounding Christmas and Hanukkah.  One way we like to celebrate is by making him drive us around to look at Christmas lights.  See?  See how good we are to him?

There are some crazy people around here.  One guy has been festooning his house with seizure-inducing decor for 18 years.  He has been on YouTube.  He has been on the news.  He has been in trouble with his HOA.  

As we were taking pictures, he came outside and invited us in.  He's a super nice guy, a bit portly, and just friendly as can be.  All he needs is about 30 more years and a big fluffy white beard and he'll be Santa Claus himself.

He was all, "sorry about the mess, I'm not done yet".  When he is done, I'm thinking he's going to have to camp out in the front yard because there's not going to be any room left in his house.

Another house that we like to visit is a little less blinky and flashy, but still just as wow-worthy:

They cover every branch of every tree on their property with lights.  They have a nativity scene, a Santa with sleigh and reindeer, and giant snowmen in an upstairs window.  They change up the indoor decorations sometimes, and they play music.  People come from miles around to gawk.
